What's new in ARCH-E

Dear ARCH-E community,

As our project comes to an end, we would like to thank everyone who contributed to this journey and helped us advance the discussion on Architectural Design Competitions (ADCs).

While the project has officially concluded, our work does not stop here: we are committed to continuing to share, promote and build on its results, ensuring that the knowledge and experiences gathered throughout the project can inspire future initiatives and support the wider architectural community.

A key step in this direction is the network transfer, which will now gather all members on the ACE HUB - a platform to connect, share knowledge and expertise.

We will also continue our webinar series on Architectural Design Competitions, providing a space to explore new challenges, share experiences and discuss topics relevant to professionals and stakeholders across Europe.

ARCH-E Network on ACE HUB

The ARCH-E Network has been created with the aim of connecting professionals in architecture all over Europe and beyond, to discuss and analyse ADCs and moreover to form transnational teams and working group to participate and cooperate in ADCs.

This is the reason why, we are now migrating this network on the ACE HUB - the new app connecting architects across Europe for professional networking, knowledge sharing, and keeping up-to-date with the latest architectural events.

In the ACE HUB, you will find our Architectural Design Competitions Community in the Interest Groups section continuing the ARCH-E networks functions. Within this community, members can start discussions, create events, and exchange ideas about opportunities and collaborations in the field.

Webinar series on ADCs systems

The ARCH-E project promotes high-quality architectural solutions by advocating for greater use of and accessibility to Architectural Design Competitions (ADCs) across Europe.
Through research and the exchange of professional knowledge, the project has explored the current ADC landscape, identifying good practices, shared challenges and areas where further action is needed to make competitions more accessible and inclusive.

Launched within the framework of ARCH-E, the webinar series is now continuing under the umbrella of the Architects’ Council of Europe, keeping the conversation alive beyond the project's duration. The webinars explore tools, approaches and practices that can help architects navigate ADCs, drawing on the knowledge and resources developed by ARCH-E as well as experiences from different national contexts.

We want to keep this exchange open and relevant to the architectural community.

Get in touch with us by email to share your ideas and help shape the next webinars, we would be delighted to hear from you!

AFTER THE PROJECT - Survey on the value of design quality in public works ( Italy)

Architectural Design Competitions can deliver high-quality public buildings without necessarily increasing overall costs.
This is one of the key findings of “After the Project”, a study commissioned by the Italian National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Conservationists (CNAPPC) and conducted by Cresme Spa.

Presented at the Italian Chamber of Deputies, the research examined 300 school buildings designed and built across Italy between 2015 and 2024, using different procurement procedures. A more detailed analysis of 103 comparable cases found that schools commissioned through design competitions took, on average, one year less to complete than those procured through other design tender procedures.

The study compared three approaches: design competitions, other design tenders and integrated procurement contracts. The findings show that design competitions can be particularly advantageous in terms of overall delivery times and architectural quality. Although they are often perceived as more expensive, the study found that cost increases between initial and final budgets were broadly comparable across the different procedures.

The research also highlighted the potential of design competitions to encourage innovation and place greater emphasis on the quality of the built environment. Through jury assessments of different aspects of design, competitions can promote solutions that respond to sustainability, long-term costs, functional efficiency, local context and landscape considerations.

The findings are particularly relevant in the current European debate on public procurement. As the European Commission reviews the EU Public Procurement framework, the study highlights the importance of considering not only initial costs and delivery schedules, but also the long-term value and quality of public investment.
Public procurement represents a significant opportunity to foster innovation in the construction sector and improve the quality of the built environment.
